Ellen Y. Zhang, Director of HoliBalance Wellness Centre, Chinese Medicine Doctor, Member of Canadian Association of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Licensed Acupuncturist of Ontario, received an orthodox education for eight years in both Chinese medicine and Western medicine. She has been doing a broad study on pain problems, women's health and practicing acupuncture and herbal treatment both in China and Toronto for over fifteen years. Dr. Zhang has extensive experience in Rheumatoid Arthritis, Infertility and other difficult cases by integrated approaches to achieve optimal health.

Brief Summary of Seminar: 一般身體脂肪含量高, 由脂肪分泌出一種物質名脂聯素的賀尔蒙, 導致血液中負責運送和運化糖份的胰島素含量下降, 甚者鐵少致糖份未能充分運用, 血糖指數上升, 形成糖尿病。病者的紅血球未能得到供用, 有三點明顯影响病者: 1. 体溫下降; 2. 不能制止流血; 3. 視力衰退

Master Yam has studied with many famous masters in China over the past 40 years on the various forms of Taoist medical, qi-gong techniques. He was an instructor at the Canadian College of Tradition Chinese Medicine. He has taught classes on the Chinese Meridian System, Meditation, Yuan-gong, and the Yang's Style Tai Chi in Mississauga and Etobicoke for the last twenty years. He has been dedicated and tireless in teaching the essence of Chinese healing arts to his students so they can heal try to themselves, prevent disease and stay healthy.

Brief Summary of Seminar: This 45 minute presentation will introduce the general idea of music therapy. It will include a power point slide presentation and a group music making experience led by music therapist. No music background is needed to participate.

Karen is a Registered Music Therapist & internship supervisor in Canada & U.S.A. She graduated from University of Toronto majoring in Psychology and Music, and obtained her Master degree in Music Therapy & Gerontology Certificate from Western Michigan University. In 2004 Karen founded Bloomy Music Therapy to serve and promote public awareness of music therapy. She is currently employed as a music therapist with the Region of Peel Municipal Government Long Term Cares (LTC) and provides regular services for community agencies & LTC(s) such as Carefirst Association, Monsheong Foundation Long Term Care and Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care. In 2009 Karen has appeared as a guest on the popular Fairchild TV program "Leisure Talk", and served as the writer for the Viva Magazine about music therapy and autism.

廖郭嘉穎 - 音樂治療碩士 加美註冊音樂治療師及認可臨床實習監督。她畢業於多倫多大學心理學系及音樂系,零四年獲美國西密芝根州立大學音樂治療碩士學位,老年學文憑及音樂治療師專業資格。郭曾任多大及西密芝根州立大學研究助理,合唱團成員,伴奏,樂理及鋼琴導師;並曾兩次以優異成績獲選密芝根音樂治療傑出學生獎學金得主。她於零四年成立蓓美音樂治療,致力提供優質服務,提倡及推動社區之音樂治療及認知;郭現職皮爾區政府長期護理服務中心為駐院音樂治療師,亦提拱定期服務予孟嘗長期護理服務中心,頤康長期護理服務中心及耆暉會腎病支援,成人日間活動中心等。郭於 2009 年被應邀為新時代電視廣受歡迎節目「大城小聚」作訪問嘉賓及為英文主流雜誌 Viva 撰寫一系列有關自閉症及音樂治療之文章。

Dr. Marla Shapiro

Brief Summary of Seminar: Review of osteoporosis, risk factors, the care gap and evolving therapies.

Dr. Marla Shapiro completed medical school at McGill University and trained at the University of Toronto for her Masters of Health Science in Community Health and Epidemiology. She trained in Family Medicine and is certified by the Canadian College of Family Practice. She concluded her specialty training in Community Medicine receiving her Fellowship in Community Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. She holds a Fellowship in Family Medicine and is a NAMS credentialed menopause specialist.

In 2000 Dr. Shapiro became the Health and Medical Contributor for CTV's Canada AM. In addition to her weekly appearances on Canada AM, she is seen on CTV News Channel and as the medical consultant on CTV's National News with Lloyd Robertson. 2003 saw the exciting addition of Balance: Television for Living Well, in which Dr. Shapiro appeared as host. This refreshing daily health and lifestyle show is seen across North American households and has sold internationally. Dr. Shapiro wrote a regular column for the Globe and Mail and currently writes a health column for Canadian Health and Living as well as her weekly blog on the CTV website. She is Editor of ParentsCanada as well as Health Essentials. She writes a regular Ask Dr. Marla column for ParetnsCanada. She is a member of several committees and advisory boards including Cancer Care Ontario, the newly formed Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, Baycrest Hospital, Research Canada and SIGMA Canadian Menopause Society.

Dr. Shapiro is the recipient of the 2005 Media Award from the North American Menopause Society for her work in expanding the understanding of menopause, and won the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada/Canadian Foundation for Women's Health Award for Excellence in Women's Health Journalism in 2006 for her documentary Run Your Own Race. The documentary, written, presented and co-produced by Dr. Shapiro, has won numerous industry awards including the New York Film Festival and the Columbus International Film and Video award. Dr. Shapiro received an Award of Excellence from the College of Family Physicians of Canada for her lifelong commitment and dedication to family medicine in 2008. As well she was awarded the Excellence in Creative Professional Activity in 2009 by the University of Toronto, Department of Family and Community Medicine. She has just been named the winner of the 2010 May Cohen Award from the Federation of Medical Women of Canada. The award recognizes a commitment to the professional, social and personal advancement of women physicians and to the promotion of the well-being of women both in the medical profession and in society at large. Her book Life in the Balance: My Journey with Breast Cancer was released in Fall 2006 and is a National Bestseller.

Dr. Ted Lo

Brief Summary of Seminar: Often unexpected, adversity is actually part of our lives. To confront it successfully requires us to be prepared. This seminar will attempt to provide some of the practical skills to address this challenge. There will be extensive discussion and interaction to include the contributions of participants.

Dr. Lo graduated from the University of Hong Kong. He works as a psychiatrist in Toronto for the past 30 years. He is also an Assistant Professor in the University of Toronto, consulting to the Culture Community & Health Studies Program and was the Founding President of Hong Fook Mental Health Association in 1982. He was awarded the first Educational Excellence for Community Care Award in 2007. At the Mental Health Commission of Canada, he was invited to lead a diversity initiative to help shape the national mental health strategy.

Dr. Ying Lu 盧瑛醫生

Dr. Ying Lu was born in Shanghai, China. She graduated with a medical degree and a PhD degree from the Queen's University in 1994. Dr. Ying Lu is attracted to ophthalmology, because she feels that the eye is the combination of both art and science. Eventually she graduated from University of Toronto ophthalmology program in 1999.

In March 2006, she flew with the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, a state-of-the-art eye surgery and teaching hospital inside a DC-10 aircraft, to Wuhan in the northern part of China, and for two weeks they treated the blind and trained the local doctors.

Dr. Lu is currently affiliated with Mount Sinai Hospital, Kensington Eye Institute, and Scarborough Grace Hospital, and is the lecturer for the University of Toronto Medical School.

Dr. Lancelot K. Tin, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.R.C.S.C. 田國樑醫生

Dr. Tin graduated from University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia in May 1983. He completed his residency at McGill University, Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal in July 1988. He was Chief of Surgery for the Credit Valley Hospital from 2002 to 2007. His professional interest and expertise include Laparoscopic Gastric Banding, GI endoscopies, Minimal Invasive Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. His recent speaking engagement includes Percutaneous Endoscopic Tracheostomy replacing the old open technique, Wound Vacuum adjunct for management of enterocutaneous fistulae, and Intra-abdominal Sepsis Updates.

Cory Evans

Brief Summary of Seminar: Heart Health and prevention highlights natural methods of correction and prevention. An outline on how body composition, weight, diet and exercise relates to heart, health and risk. Current evidence and understanding about "cardiovascular injury" is discussed. This seminar relates to those of any age, ability and gender.

Corey is the Director of the BODiWORKS Centre for Specialized Wellness in Mississauga, which has individually helped thousands of adults and children since 1995. He is President of the Freedom Initiatives Health Corp, a consulting firm currently providing corporate presentations and motivation solutions.

Corey is the GTA-West Chapter President of the Weston Price Foundation for natural foods and research. He's received inspiration and education from the Dr. A. Wail Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. Corey is the creator and founder of the Adapted Gym Program for special needs children, a first in Canada. This is an innovative program that helps children and teens with Autism, Downs, CP and developmental delays remediate motor skills and associated behaviours. Corey holds a degree in Kinesiology and Health Sciences with a strong continuance of certifications in the wellness, exercise therapy and human behaviour fields.

Corey professional presents on varying health topics. He uniquely bridges the gap of information between holistic/alternative health and conventional health knowledge.

He actively speaks to medical staff, corporations, community organizations, universities and businesses. He coaches on various topics related to wellness and behaviour solutions.

Winnie Yung, RD 容穎姸註冊營養師

Brief Summary of Seminar: This seminar will focus on healthy eating and arthritis. Practical tips for healthy weight loss and arthritis symptoms management, as related to nutrition, will be discussed.

Winnie Yung is a Registered Dietician specializing in nutrition education and chronic disease management. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Science and a Masters of Applied Nutrition degree from the University of Guelph. Winnie believes in promoting dietary and lifestyle changes by providing her clients with not only the theory but also practical tips needed to facilitate change. She is often invited to share her expertise as a guest speaker at various non-profit community events.

Uma Sebastiampillai, M.H.Sc. RD

Uma Sebastiampillai is a Registered Dietitian (RD). She received her Honors Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from University of Toronto and completed her Master in Health Science in Community Nutrition at University of Toronto. Currently she is working as part-time dietitian at the Diabetes Management Centre, Trillium Health Centre Mississauga. She has also been working in various sectors including public health, food industry, hospital, long-term care, home care and private practice.

Detective Rick Hawes

Brief Summary of Seminar: To assist the audience in understanding the legal definition of Family/Domestic Violence and the police response to calls of this nature. Some resources available to families experiencing domestic violence will also be discussed.

Rick is married with 3 grown children, and their 2nd grandchild on the way. He has been a police officer for 32 years, and the Regional Family Violence Coordinator for the past 5 years. His responsibilities include ensuring compliance with directives and Provincial mandate in responding to Domestic Violence, as well as training all levels of policing in this important field. Rick oversees policy change/improvements with a focus on the needs and safety of the victim(s).
